Lilyfontein School

Music, art & culture

Music

Music is an integral part of the Lilyfontein Spirit.

Class music is taught as part of the Life Skills/Creative Arts curriculums from Grade R to Grade 6. During class, learners are exposed to the world of music, sounds, theory and performance and have lots of fun.

Learners across the phases have the opportunity to gain ensemble experience in recorder groups and marimba bands. We also enjoy choirs and singing groups throughout all the Phases.

In addition, we offer individual tuition in piano, keyboard, recorder, flute, vocals and guitar.  Lessons mainly take place during the school morning, or in the afternoons by arrangement.  Bands/choirs are part of the extra-mural programme and take place in the afternoons.

Where We Perform

  • The Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod
  • School occasions such as Founders Day, Open Days and Prize Giving
  • School concerts, School productions and Assemblies
  • Weddings, Graduations and other local events, upon request.

ART

With the knowledge that the arts are essential in the development of the whole child, our art department provides our learners with the space for self-expression through a wide variety of art forms such as printmaking, collage, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and painting and design.

Lilyfontein offers Art as a subject from Grade 1 through to Grade 9 in our two vibrant art classrooms that are always hives of creativity. Extra-mural art clubs are also available to learners within these grades, promoting the extension of their creativity.

Where We Exhibit

  • EL Fest Eisteddfod Grade 1-12 (Belgravia Art School)
  • East London Primary School’s Art Exhibition (Belgravia Art School)
  • East London High Schools Art Exhibition (Belgravia Art School)
  • School events, including: Founders Day, Open Evenings, Awards Ceremonies, etc.

CULTURE

Lilyfontein offers all learners the opportunity to participate in several societies and cultural activities throughout the year.

We recognise the importance of sharing our cultural differences and celebrating our diversity.  Culture is celebrated in each phase throughout the year but really culminates in September during Heritage Week.  Currently each phase of the school arranges age appropriate activities that explore the concept of culture in South Africa and our heritage.  It is hoped that through these activities through which we share our stories, music, dance and culinary delights we will build a nation of learners that foster tolerance and understanding.

DRAMA

Drama is a vibrant addition to our co-curricular offering. Every year the Pre-Primary children put on a play, introducing them to the thrill of being part of a dramatic production. The Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase and High School take turns, each putting on one play in a 3-year cycle. These are made possible through a collaboration with the music department, educators with a special interest in drama and our community.

As an extension to our extra-mural programme, Helen O’Grady Drama School hold a drama club in the school hall on a weekly basis. This is available to all learners in the Primary School.

DEBATING

Lilyfontein has a vibrant Debating Society with both junior and senior teams. Throughout the year, our debaters take part in workshops and competitions that help them grow in confidence, sharpen their communication skills, and think critically. They regularly compete in the Border and Interschools Debating Competitions, proudly representing Lilyfontein and gaining valuable experience.
