Academic Approach

At Lilyfontein Foundation Phase we focus on developing the whole child. Our aim is to foster balance between the academic, cultural, physical and spiritual spheres of learning.

Academics involve a team approach.  We have seven classes in total, three for the all-important first grade and two each for Grades 2 and 3. Our staff complement includes class teachers, as well as specialist teachers in isiXhosa, Art, Music, Phys Ed, Computers, Permaculture and Library, as well as Learnerships who are in the classrooms to assist the educators.  We follow the CAPS syllabus and consolidate the skills and concepts through a mix of hands-on activities, pencil and paper, play and technology.

With the support of parents, we strive to enable each child to respect the needs, beliefs and cultures of other people; to explore and appreciate the wonders of the environment and to respond to the challenges of life with confidence.

Grade 1 finishes school at 13:00 and extra murals begin at 13h10 until 13h45. Grades 2 and 3 finish at 13:30, with extra murals running from 13h45 to 14h30

Birthdays and sporting or cultural results and events are celebrated at our weekly Assembly, which takes place within the Foundation Phase sector.

Communication

We use the D6 for key communication.

Aftercare

After Care is available for afternoon stay.

EXTRA-MURALS

Our extra-mural program offers ball skills, swimming, MTB cycling, hockey, rugby, netball, cricket, majorettes and adventure sport. A concert is produced once in a three-year cycle where opportunities are provided for the culturally talented children to shine.  We have a variety of music and drama options in which learners can become involved.

Learners are required to participate in a minimum of one extra-mural activity per term.

ADVENTURE

Adventure is at the heart of Lilyfontein School and our learners are given exposure to the thrill of adventure activities from the outset.

From Grade 1, learners participate in an adventure day each term and a one-night camp-out each year.  These activities take them out of the classroom where they enjoy structured, age appropriate challenges and teamwork activities as part of the Life Orientation curriculum.

Aftercare

After Care is available for children who need to stay on the premises after extra-mural sessions have finished. Homework supervision is offered as an optional extra.

This service is offered from Monday to Friday from 13:00 until 17:00 After Care fees can be found in the fee schedule on the Admissions page.

Communication

At Lilyfontein School, we value an open and co-operative relationship between parents and staff.

We are an eco-friendly school and prefer to use as little paper as possible; we therefore use the D6 as a vital communication portal which must be checked regularly for any updates and important letters to parents. Alerts inform parents of more urgent information.

If learners are absent or parents require a meeting with a teacher, parents are requested to please e-mail the front office (reception@lilyfontein.co.za)  and CC in the relevant teacher.  The weekly newsletter gives parents a picture of the ‘whole school’ activities.
