What is an Eco School?

The Eco-Schools programme is a global initiative that helps schools teach and take action on environmental issues. Run in South Africa by WESSA since 2003, it encourages learners to care for the environment and supports schools in teaching sustainability as part of the curriculum. With more than half of some CAPS subjects focusing on environmental topics, Eco-Schools helps make learning more relevant and meaningful for South African learners.

Lilyfontein – Two Decades as an Eco School

Lilyfontein is proud to have been an Eco-School since 2006, with eco-friendly values deeply woven into our school culture. Surrounded by indigenous gardens and farmland, we offer a learning environment that inspires care for the planet and encourages sustainable living every day.

One of the long-standing achievements that we are truly proud of is being the winners of the #Call2Action Schools Recycling Award for collecting the most waste in Buffalo City—thanks to our strong recycling programme led by our Eco Department. This is no small accomplishment for a small school. The next chapter of this success is to help our neighbouring schools do the same.

Every year, the whole school takes part in a themed action project that helps build and improve our eco-campus. Past projects have included building our recycling centre, creating eco-brick walls for our outdoor classroom, expanding our permaculture garden, and labelling indigenous trees across the campus.

Our permaculture programme is a highlight of the Primary School. Learners in Grades 1–6 have weekly lessons in our food garden where they learn to grow their own vegetables using organic, sustainable methods. It’s hands-on learning that teaches teamwork, responsibility, and a deep connection to nature.

Commitment to Eco Education

Lilyfontein was voted one of the top 5 Eco Schools in South Africa in 2016. In 2018 we were acknowledged for our outstanding achievements in the Eco-Schools’ Programme at the provincial WESSA Eco School Awards Ceremony. In 2024 we received the Platinum 4 Decade Award from WESSA.

Through the incorporation of Eco lessons into our curriculum, a themed focus each year and an emphasis on outdoor pursuits, our learners form a connection to the environment that follows them into their daily lives.  By fostering that connection and creating an ecological awareness, Lilyfontein learners hopefully enter the world being the change they want to see.

Giving Back

Our Eco Clubs raise funds on an annual basis to support endangered animal programmes. This includes hosting civvies days, cake sales and other fun activities. Our donations are typically used to support rhino and elephant protection.

Giving back also includes taking care of our environment. Beach and school clean-ups are a regular feature on our calendar, led by our eco clubs with many of our learners joining in to help.
