Dear Parents
 
This is the final newsletter of the year and it contains some very important information with regard to the start of the new academic year in January 2019. Please take note of the following.


FAREWELL
As a school community, we would like to wish the following staff members well for the future as they pursue their different paths in life: Mrs Susan Clarke; Miss Tracey Gaze; Mrs Lara Gratz and Mr Alan Angelbeck. Mr Angelbeck will however be back in 2019 to assist us in the Maths Department until the DoE finalizes the Maths Post applications. We would like to thank them all for their contribution to Lilyfontein – we are going to miss each one of them!

START OF FIRST TERM

The start of the new school year for 2019 will be on Wednesday, 9 January 2019. 

  • Pre-Primary times: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (9, 10 and 11 January) school will start at 7:30 and end at 11:00.  From Monday, 21 January, Pre-Primary will end at 12:00 each day.
  • Foundation Phase:
Grade 1
7:30 - 12:00 (9 – 18 January).
7:30 - 13:00 (21 January) 

Grade 2 & 3
7:30 – 13:15

Grade 4 – 12
The school day will begin at 7:30 each day and end at 14:10 Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (9, 10 & 11 January).

  • Will be held on Friday, 11 January 2019 at 09:10.
  • Invitations to parents will follow.
Junior Leaders Induction
  • Will be held on Friday, 11 January 2019 at 07:45.
  • Invitations to parents will follow.
  • Junior Leaders Camp will be held from Friday, 1 March to Saturday, 2 March 2019.
JUNIOR LEADERS
The 2019 Junior Leaders need to be at school on Tuesday, 8 January from 7:30 to 12:00 for an important meeting and duties. They need to be dressed in their informal summer uniform.

PARENT MEETING Grade 0 – Grade 12
 

All parents are invited to attend an information evening on Monday, 14 January 2019 in our School Hall.  Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served from 17:15 and the meeting will start at 17:45. After the address in the Hall, parents will go to their child’s classroom to be informed about the expectations for the year.

LYNX MAGAZINE

Each family will receive one copy of the magazine with the reports.

Please support this campaign and initiative to improve security on our campus.  We request that all parents/guardians or drivers collecting and dropping learners off at school purchase a disc at a cost of R50. Your support is appreciated.

Reminder – PLEASE confirm your book order at African Book Connection as a matter of urgency.  As parents, we need to ensure that our children are properly equipped for the start of the new academic year.

GRADE 8 ORIENTATION
Grade 8 parents are requested to please take note of the letter sent home with the reports regarding Grade 8 Orientation on Tuesday, 8 January 2019.
 
GRADE 4’s 2019
All Grade 4’s of 2019 will attend school on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 in uniform from 8:30 to 9:30 for orientation into Intermediate Phase.

HOSTEL PUPILS
ALL hostel pupils must arrive at hostel dressed in full school uniform at 16:00 on Tuesday, 8 January 2019.  

HOSTEL FEES
ALL hostel fees must be paid on or before the day of your child’s entry into the hostel.  No child will be allowed to stay at the hostel without proof of payment being presented on the day.
 
EXTRA TIME APPLICATION
Applications need to be early in the new year.  Forms are available from the front office and must include a Scholastic Assessment not older than 3 years.  Please note learners need to re-apply for each phase.
 
UNIFORMS
Please ensure that your child is correctly dressed for school next year.

PLEASE NOTE
:
  • Please ensure that your child returns to school next year with their own natural coloured hair in a neat style. 
  • Our school tracksuit forms part of our winter uniform and tracksuit pants may not be worn without the tracksuit top.
  • Official Lilyfontein socks must be worn with ‘mid-week’ uniform.
  • Only predominantly white tackies with a navy trim are allowed.
  • Any contravention of our dress code will mean a parent being asked to return to school to correct the dress or hair fault.
SCHOOL SHOP
Please note that our school shop will open on Monday and Tuesday, 7 & 8 January from 09:00 – 11:30 and then each Monday to Thursday from 7:30 – 8:00.

Santa Claus came to visit the pre-primary this morning.  What a treat all the little ones got a present from Santa.  Thanks Mr  Angelbeck for being Lilyfontein's Santa doing his last visit before retirement!
 
In the pitch-black night, stung by jellyfish, choking on salt water, singing to herself, hallucinating ... Diana Nyad just kept on swimming. And that's how she finally achieved her lifetime goal as an athlete: an extreme 100-mile swim from Cuba to Florida -- at age 64. Hear her story.

SPORT NEWS: Bass Angling 
Congratulations to Nathan Lentz who has qualified in the Eastern Division fish-offs held between Southern Cape, Eastern Province and Border to represent the Eastern Division Junior Bass Angling Team for a 4th consecutive season. Nathan was part of the team which made history by taking top honours at the 2017 championship and then amazingly repeating this feat on the Vaal River Championship in 2018. This was truly a remarkable achievement in Eastern Division Bass Angling history. The team will compete in the South African Junior National Championships to be held on Witbank Dam in Mpumalanga from 28 to 31 March 2019.The team will travel home on 1 April. All the best for the tournament.

Kara Freitag competed in the Horse of the Year 2019 show held in Kyalami in March. This phenomenal young rider earned the following top accolades:

Aiden Young (Grade 11) ran the Buffs Half Marathon, 21km on 10 March 2019 and was placed 2nd junior in a time of 1.31.32.

MAJORETTES
Congratulations to the Lilyfontein Majorettes took part in the Finals of the PNA Ultimate Performer Competition. The athletes took to the stage in true majorette form. The Lilyfontein Majorettes walked away with the following titles:

- Ultimate Petit & Junior Large Group
- Overall Petit & Junior Group - Ultimate Junior Dancer

  • Kirsten Nash - competing and winning her 80cm equitation, and 90cm Welcome stakes class.
  • Rachel Keen - competing and winning her level 2 equitation, and level 1 working riding.
  • Anya Nash - winning the 80cm Welcome stakes level 3 event.
  • Bridget Venebels - winning her Stadium eventing level 5, In hand utility level 3, Handy Hunter level 3, 70cm welcome stakes, 70cm A2, Working Hunter level 3, and Performance Riding level 7 on multiples horses.

SPORT RESULTS: Equestrian - Primary School
Notable mentions are:

  • Keira Davies - participating in the pony rider 90cm equitation, 1m Welcome stakes, and the 2 Phase and Accumulator 1,1m, and the 90cm Working Hunter classes, highly successfully, and despite being the only participant in these SANESA classes, very deserving of her first places in all of these high level events.
  • Kel-c Mclellan - winning two pony rider 70cm level 3 jumping events, and her pony rider level 3 handy hunter class.
  • Abby Partovi - winning her level 2 60cm equitation.
