Lilyfontein School

  • 27 July 2018

    Dear Parents,
Please take note of the following:

    Term 3: PTA Meeting 2 August 2018
Lilyfontein parents, do you have an hour in your busy day to spend with us, to find out more about the PTA and how you can support, help and contribute to the success of your child's school. Please join us in the staff room on Thursday 2 August at 5.30pm. Looking forward to seeing you there!

    Interact: Sleep Out

Well done to all 103 learners and four teachers, who braved the winter weather and slept out at Lilyfontein School last night. This formed part of the Nationwide CEO School SleepOut campaign. The learners experienced what it was like to sleep out in the cold with only a blanket and some cardboard. They were only allowed to eat one bowl of soup and a roll, thank you to the Crossways Spar for donating the ingredients and rolls. Wow what an awesome evening!

    Adventure Race 2018 7-8 September
Book your team into the Lilyfontein Adventure Race 7-8 September at a venue somewhere on the East Coast Resorts Rd (to be released in August). Each four member team must include at least one member of the opposite gender. Teams will be running, cycling and completing various adventure based challenges along the routes.

    3 August 2018

    Dear Parents,
Please take note of the following:

    Public/School Holiday
Please be advised that school will close on Wednesday, 8 August and re-open on Monday, 13 August. Thursday, 9 August is a Public Holiday, Women's Day and Friday, 10 August is a School Holiday.

    Senior Leaders 2019
Congratulations to the following learners who were announced as Senior Leaders for 2019 at today's Assembly: Lisakhanya Bosman; Ludwig Bremer; Alastair Connet; Jordan Ekron; Melissa Hayward; Conor Jacobs; Aphelele Jali; Siphosethu Jikwa; Christean Keese; Curtis Kleinhans; Joanna Lloyd; Logan McQuirk; Jaydee Nicholson; Matthew Niemand; Thandile Ntlatleng; Meghan Stolz; Kiara van Bloemmenstein and Josie van Heerden.

    Foundation Phase Safety
When dropping your children off at school in the mornings, please see that they are brought safely to the school gate. Although we have pedestrian walkways in our car park, children need to be accompanied by parents/adult whilst walking on these walkways. Please also remember that we have a teacher on duty from 7:15 and learners arriving earlier are not supervised. They may not use any playground apparatus before the teacher on duty arrives. We encourage parents to say their goodbyes at the gate, allowing their children the
independence of carrying their bag and arriving at class.

    Adventure Race 2018: 7-8 September
Hello Lilyfontein family, book your team into the Lilyfontein Adventure Race. Each four member team must include at least one member of the opposite gender. Teams will be running, cycling and completing various adventure based challenges along the routes. We would love a full house from team Lilyfontein.

Congratulations to our awesome rap and poetry stars for writing such beautiful poems enjoy the read.

Foundation Phase:  Oliver Pascoe, Grade 3
    Rhino rap
    No more poaching
“I woke up in the morning and this is what I saw…I saw a big fat rhino walking right through my door.  I’m feeling pretty lucky ‘cause they are very rare, but people are poaching them, everywhere.  There’s some folk in China that are buying their horns, they just don’t care that they are breaking the laws.  They put it in their medicines, they think it makes them strong, they just don’t know that killing rhinos is wrong…..so back to that rhino that was walking through my door, if the poachers keep up their nonsense, they won’t be there anymore!!!”

Grade 4-6:  Logan McLaren, Grade 5
    The Rhino Poem
    Hey Mr Rhino
    How are you?
    Oh no, your horn’s gone
    What did they do?

They came and chopped it off with a saw
Even though poaching is against the law.
They didn’t even give me some pain pills,
They just took off with the horn
    And ran for the hills

    Oh, it’s a sin
    To try and make medicine
They think my horn is powerful and magic
When it’s actually all very tragic

Don’t worry Mr Rhino, we’ll throw the poachers in jail
And that’s where they’ll stay until they are frail.

    Grade 7:  Megan Emslie
    The Rhino
The amount of rhinos poached has grown
All because of the myths about their horn.
The horn which should be displayed in its natural beauty
Has now been made into human “muti”

Why do we hunt this beautiful creature?
Because of its horn, the main feature?
Their deep brown eyes and silky lashes
But no horn, just knife slashes.

It’s sad to think they could be gone one day
Just because people are willing to pay
    To buy rhino horn medicine
    Keeping the demand for them.

To stop poaching, we must educate
Because it won’t be too late
Education could stop the use of
    Rhino keratin.

    The horn
    So big
    So vast
    We won’t let poaching last.

    We won’t let rhinos go
Because we will let the poachers know
    That we
    Will stand
    For
    Rhinos.

Intermediate Phase: Book Character Dress up Day - 25 September was a great success the learners loved showing off their characters.

#TedTalk Tuesday: This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Jennifer Nacif tells us how to shift manipulation to motivation when it comes to communicating with our children. Jennifer plays the characters of four different children, and in clever fashion, shows us how different personalities require different reactions from parents. The needs of each personality are not only relevant to the children in our lives, but to everyone we encounter, and Jennifer provides easy and actionable ways to motivate and empower those around us.

Where should I live? Big decisions like these can be agonizingly difficult. But that's because we think about them the wrong way, says philosopher Ruth Chang. She offers a powerful new framework for shaping who we truly are. Be the authors of your own lives!

This week the #Lilyfontein rugby boys made great use of the gym to let off some steam during the exam sessions.  This has proved to be a very valuable outlet during this time and the learners have enjoyed the opportunity not only to strength train but also an outlet for stress during exam time.

How vital is adventure? We gave an expert and five young people a unique experience to find out. Watch what happened. Over three days, we took adventure away from Alastair Humphreys, a professional adventurer who thrives in the outdoors. Meanwhile, we gave five children an exciting weekend away from home to see what they gained. As a charity, we create unique opportunities for young people to discover the world and their potential in it. Why? Because where you go changes who you become.
