    STAFF NEWS

Mrs Wood is still off school recuperating, but will be assisting with our Grade 12 Geography 8th subject learners.

    PARENT / SCHOOL / LEARNER CO-OPERATION
In order for us as a learning institution to provide quality education, we would like to ensure that we manage a safe, healthy and focused context for our parents, educators and learners. We appeal to you as parents and primary educators of your children, to uphold our school’s Code of Conduct, Dress Code and Academic Expectations. In this way we can ensure a collaborative and co-operative learning experience for all our learners. Conflicting standards and levels of discipline between home and school are confusing and self-destructive. Let us ensure that we are all on the same educational page.

    PARENT INVOLVEMENT
At the start of this year, I appeal to all parents to involve themselves in the activities of the school. We need your help and support in all our fundraising ventures in order to maintain the high standard in our school to which our children have become accustomed and for which our school is renowned. Your involvement at school is critical to maintaining good relations and your contribution to the progress and development of our school is highly valued. There are a range of activities throughout the year in which we would like to see you involved. You will receive a list of these shortly eg. Tomato Trot – 2 February, please return reply slips to class teachers by Monday & Tuesday next week.

All are welcome to join the Lilyfontein Prayer Group each Friday morning at 7.30 in the Hostel.

    VEHICLES/MOTORBIKES
Any students who bring vehicles/motorbikes onto campus need to ensure that:

Our computer programme automatically issues a demerit if your child’s name is entered as absent without a letter. Parents are requested to please support us in this matter. The DoE has ruled that any learner absent for 25% of the year, will not be allowed to write examinations due to the lack of class time.

How to practice emotional first aid | Guy Winch

We'll go to the doctor when we feel flu-ish or a nagging pain. So why don’t we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness? Too many of us deal with common psychological-health issues on our own, says Guy Winch. But we don’t have to. He makes a compelling case to practice emotional hygiene — taking care of our emotions, our minds, with the same diligence we take care of our bodies.

Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?"  His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers -- and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

#TEDTALK Tuesday presents: Your body language may shape who you are | Amy Cuddy. Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argues that "power posing" -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident -- can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success. (Note: Some of the findings presented in this talk have been referenced in an ongoing debate among social scientists about robustness and reproducibility.

This week the #Lilyfontein rugby boys made great use of the gym to let off some steam during the exam sessions.  This has proved to be a very valuable outlet during this time and the learners have enjoyed the opportunity not only to strength train but also an outlet for stress during exam time.

How vital is adventure? We gave an expert and five young people a unique experience to find out. Watch what happened. Over three days, we took adventure away from Alastair Humphreys, a professional adventurer who thrives in the outdoors. Meanwhile, we gave five children an exciting weekend away from home to see what they gained. As a charity, we create unique opportunities for young people to discover the world and their potential in it. Why? Because where you go changes who you become.

#TEDTALK Tuesday presents: How to make hard choices by Ruth Chang. Here's a talk that could literally change your life. Which career should I pursue? Should I break up — or get married?! Where should I live? Big decisions like these can be agonizingly difficult. But that's because we think about them the wrong way, says philosopher Ruth Chang. She offers a powerful new framework for shaping who we truly are. Be the authors of your own lives!

Last week #Lilyfontein Pre-Primary were learning about the ocean. The learners were able to come to school dressed up as their favourite sea creatures and bring posters and books about the sea. How wonderful it is to be a child. #NEVERstopLEARNING!

#TEDTALK Tuesday introduces How to gain control of your free time by Laura Vandekam. There are 168 hours in each week. How do we find time for what matters most? Time management expert Laura Vanderkam studies how busy people spend their lives, and she's discovered that many of us drastically overestimate our commitments each week, while underestimating the time we have to ourselves. She offers a few practical strategies to help find more time for what matters to us, so we can "build the lives we want in the time we've got."

This week the grade 4 #Lilyfontein learners had to create a product, plan it, design it and sell it in the form of a poster.  The imagination is priceless.  Well done grade 4's, your future is bright!

#TEDTALK Tuesday: Kate Drummond is living proof that it is never too late to follow your dreams. After 12 years as an elementary school teacher, Kate left the classroom and life, as she knew it, behind. She sold all her belongings and possessions, packed up her dog and moved to Toronto to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an actress. In this inspirational talk, Kate shares her journey and the many lessons she has learned as a result of taking her biggest leap of faith. Little did she know that making this change in her life would actually change her life. And There I Was: A Tale About Chasing Dreams & Beginning Again
